Merseyside

Welcome to Merseyside
From coastal promenades to city streets, Merseyside has room for every kind of life.
Merseyside is a region you can shape to your own pace of life. Grand Victorian villas sit alongside spacious family semis and cosy village cottages, so there’s a home here for whatever stage you’re at. Coastal air in Formby and Blundellsands, riverside calm along the Mersey in Cressington and Grassendale, village heart in Woolton — all within easy reach of Liverpool.
Section 01 — The market
These Merseyside and Sefton suburbs offer a broad mix of housing, from grand Victorian and Edwardian villas in Cressington, Grassendale and Mossley Hill, to spacious semi-detached and detached homes in Blundellsands, Allerton and Formby, and more modest cottages and period homes in Knowsley Village and Woolton. Homeownership rates are consistently high across the region (over 79% in Blundellsands, for example), reflecting stable, established communities that appeal to families, professionals and retirees alike. Coastal and riverside settings such as Birkdale, Formby and Grassendale command a premium for their location, while regeneration towns like Prescot are attracting newer developments alongside their historic housing stock.
Section 02 — What to love
- Leafy, tree-lined streets and characterful period architecture
- Strong transport links, with direct rail routes into Liverpool and beyond
- High homeownership rates and settled, welcoming communities
- Low crime rates and family-friendly environments
- Easy access to parks, coastline and nature reserves
- Vibrant village centres with independent shops, cafés and pubs
Section 03 — Local lifestyle
Across these areas, the appeal is largely the same: a slower, more settled pace of life within easy reach of Liverpool, Southport or Manchester. Coastal suburbs like Birkdale, Blundellsands and Formby offer seaside serenity, while riverside spots such as Cressington and Grassendale provide a tranquil, leafy setting along the Mersey. Villages including Woolton, Lydiate and Knowsley Village retain a strong sense of community and history, and prestigious suburbs like Mossley Hill and Allerton combine timeless charm with modern convenience. Wherever you look, low crime rates and community spirit make these areas particularly attractive to families and long-term residents.
Section 04 — Dining, entertainment & shopping
Most of these areas centre around a village high street or main road lined with independent cafés, boutique shops and gastropubs, such as Allerton Road, Formby Village, Lord Street in Southport, and Woolton’s village centre. Coastal towns add seafront dining and leisure, from Southport’s Marine Lake attractions to Formby’s coastal cafés, while riverside and village locations like Grassendale, Cressington and Knowsley Village favour cosy pubs and local shops over larger retail. Southport stands out for its scale, with Wayfarers Arcade and Central 12 Shopping Park supplementing its high street.
Section 05 — Things to do
Green and open space is a common thread, from Calderstones Park in Allerton and Sefton Park in Mossley Hill, to Otterspool Promenade shared by Cressington and Grassendale, and Reynolds Park and Woolton Woods in Woolton. Coastal areas offer beaches, dunes and wildlife, particularly Formby’s red squirrels and Southport’s 22 miles of coastline, while Knowsley Village and Prescot add heritage attractions such as Knowsley Safari Park and the Shakespeare North Playhouse. Golf, walking, cycling and canal-side routes feature heavily across the region.
Section 06 — Schools
Good schools shape a family’s choice of home as much as the house itself, and Merseyside has plenty worth knowing about — from Mossley Hill’s Liverpool College and Dovedale Primary to Southport’s Greenbank High, Freshfield Primary near Formby, and church primaries in Lydiate and Cressington. I’m always happy to talk through catchments and admissions for any address you’re considering.
